This picture is an example of how the Klamath River Indians lived after the arrival of settlers. They still maintained their culture even though the world was changing all around them.

In the year 1855 growing unrest between white miners and settlers, and the local Indians along the Klamath river lead to extreme violence and the Red Cap War. The letters here show how this time was full of misunderstandings and inhumane acts by white men onto Indian people. Notice specifically the violence against and dehumanization of Indian women, described on page 205 in a letter to the Special Indian Agent and in note 11. On page 207.
