Title

Article from the Northwest Outpost publication

Description

This article, which went into print exactly one hundred years after the events of the Bridge Gulch Massacre, details some of the area’s rougher characteristics during it’s early days as a mining town. Included in the text is a brief account of resident John Anderson’s death, supposedly at the hands of Wintu tribesmen, and the brutal killing of over 150 native Wintu by miners and the local militia. Due to the age of the article, the author still paints Indians as a nuisance to the white inhabitants of the region. However, he admits that the slaughter was “barbarous”.
