Title

Wintu Indian bark house in Redding, California

Description

Wintu Indian bark house at Turtle Bay Museum at Sundial Bridge across Sacramento River in Redding in Northern California. An accurate recreation of what the normal building style was for this tribe. This make sense as most of wintu territory is heavily forested, much of it redwoods, which could be striped of it outer bark without killing the tree. Most of these houses are made from bark from over 50 trees. The size of these structures can range from small ~7ft to much larger ~15ft in diameter.
