Title A name given to the resource "Indian Massacre" News Article from Weekly Humboldt Times Description An account of the resource This newspaper article discusses an attack on Indian Island by local white men, resulting in the indiscriminate slaughter of the entire tribe at the rancheria, as well as several “Mad River Indians” passing through. It goes on to address the massacre as a seemingly coordinated attack, identifying several other villages (names listed within) that occurred on the same night. The viewpoint of the author implies some sympathy towards the killing of the defenseless women (squaws) and children, however, that murder of the indigenous men was considered justified in the protection of the settlers’ home and family.
