Here is a photo of Annie Sam, one of the few survivors (along with her family) of the Indian Island Massacre. Her sister Jane, one of their brothers, and their mother all hid in the brush, narrowly with their lives.

Here is a picture of Jerry James, one of the few survivors of the Indian Island Massacre. He was found as an infant on the island in the arms of his dead mother. He grew up to become a respected leader within the Wiyot community and provided information about the tribe to ethnographers. James’s obituary stated that he “carried no malice toward the whites for the murder of his people."
