Description

Here is a photo of James D. Henry Brown who was named by those in the Wiyot tribe as the main perpetrator and leader behind the Indian Island Massacre. Later determined to be true by historian Martha Roscoe as she states that he lived on a ranch in Kneeland at the time (a few miles outside of Eureka) and reportedly “tried to run everyone out (Natives) and was said to have scalped people in order to blame it on the Indians.” Was part of the Humboldt Volunteers.
